Boys of the Prairie began in the 1980s as a duo with Frank Shopen (fiddle, cittern, mandolin) and Randy Brown (6- and 12-string guitar, mandocello, mandolin). The lineup has fluctuated from a duo to trio to quartet over the years. After an extended hiatus, the band returned in 2018 as a power quartet with Randy and Frank joined by Eric Ryan on flute and whistle and Tony Silvestri on vocals, concertina and bodhrán. This new lineup has a uniquely Midwestern Celtic style drawing from a wide breadth of Celtic influences from Ireland, Brittany and Scotland. Boys of the Prairie have a rich tapestry of melodies and songs ranging from sean-nós to modern and original compositions.
